Professor Norman Black was Director of the Northern Ireland Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC) from 1994 to 1999. He became the Head of Medical Informatics at the University of Ulster in 1999. He has held the posts of Dean of Informatics and Dean of Engineering and currently is Pro Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation). He has extensive research experience having been President of the European Society for Engineering and Medicine (ESEM) and a Founder Member of the Institute of Telemedicine. He continues to be active in research and his research interests include biomedical engineering, medical informatics, telemedicine, data fusion, and bioengineering education. Liming Chen received his BSc and MSc in Computing Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology, China, and DPhil in Artificial Intelligence from De Montfort University, United Kingdom. Chris Nugent is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ulster. He received a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Systems and DPhil in Biomedical Engineering both from the University of Ulster. His research within biomedical engineering addresses the themes of Technologies to Support Independent Living, Medical Decision Support Systems specifically in the domain of computerised electrocardiology and the development of Internet based healthcare models. Her research interests include machine learning, data mining and their applications to healthcare informatics. She is particularly interested in the following research area: intelligent data analysis, patter recognition and representation; healthcare decision support, assistive technology to support independent living, activity recognition and analysis, gait analysis; prediction of protein protein interaction, mass spectra, gene expression and microarray data analysis, data integration and feature selection techniques.
